I adored the other books in this series and preordered "Ruins of Alder" a month before it came out. The day that I got it, I sat down and read it right away. Oh, how I anticipated this book!

Sadly, I found that it fell short of my (admittedly very high) expectations. It's not so much what's in the book -- the characters are consistent with the earlier books, and also able to change gracefully throughout their adventures; the weirdness is still weird, the wittiness still witty -- as what's NOT in it. I felt like the last, oh, fifty pages or so were just MISSING, that many of the subplots went not only unresolved but unaddressed. If this were not the end of the series, I would call it a cliffhanger. But it is, so I don't know what to think.

That said, I feel that the subplots and main plots that were concluded were satisfactory, that the book was consistent with the others in the series, and that oddness of the story did not overshadow the style/plot/characters, etc. In other words, it was an excellent addition to the series... just not the most satisfying ending.

It gets my 12 year old to read so I love it
I am a loyal fan of Obert Skye and his refreshing weirdness. I anticipated this book for weeks and devoured it in less than three hours. It was sadly lacking, mostly in the ending department. I was expecting something a little more worthy of the rest of the series, but it fell short. It was still an amazing book, and has an honored place on my bookshelf. It just could have used an ending that wrapped the amazing series up better.
This was both a typical Leven Thumps book and the typical last book in a series. The author spent a lot of time wrapping up loose plot lines and not very much time on character development. But I think that is normal given the age range for the book and comparable to other series I have read. Apparently, Obert Skye will be doing a new series about Geth and the Lithens as an offshoot from this one.
I bought the entire Leven Thumps series for my 11 y.o. son and he loved the books; he could not put them down. I went into his room one evening to say goodnight and he had fallen asleep holding one of the books. He would read them every free moment that he had and I think that he read the entire series in a couple of weeks. He even stopped watching TV so he could read. Amazing!!

I love these books, and have been meaning to get this last one for years. The only minor problem I had with this copy was that the cover is different from the one pictured, and different from the rest of my books. It doesn't affect my rating though, I still love the story.
I know all the rage today is for Twilight, but this was the first book which really got my daughter, who did not enjoy reading, to really read and then want more. We have all of the Obert Skye books and she has read then twice, at least. I must admit I tired a little of her coming to me and providing a recap of the chapter she read, but it told me she was really reading and absorbing. Yes she has expanded her reading, but she still likes the Levan Thumps series the best.
Ok, if you have been following the series, you have to finish by reading this book. Now some of the main characters are still hilarous (Geth, Clover). The chapters were easy reads, and the story kept moving, but I thought the ending was flat. There was so much build up on getting into reality and so few chapters when the characters got to reality. The climax was good but the last chapter could have been stronger. Over all I would give this book a B and the series a B+. I really did enjoy Clover and the toothpic.
I would recommend it to teenagers, for ease of read and funny dialogue.
