This was not as good as I was hoping for.Obviously I wasn't expecting it to be strictly historically accurate, but I didn't really get the feeling that the characters were in the Victorian era either. A police officer just coming in and questioning a princess? Not buying it. Language was also a little too modern for my taste, and I could have done without the quick relationship that builds between Vicky and the police character (not a spoiler, since they refer to it in the blurb).

It featured such fine lines as:
"She shuddered at the force of his voice. Why had she not recognized the power of this man the moment she’d walked into the room?"
"Frowning, he tried to ignore the electric surge working its way downward and into unspeakable regions of his body. "
"Thomas had known how to feed her passion and then satisfy her again and again in varied and delicious ways."

Also, some of the actions of the characters just seemed far too modern or just off in general.
A reasonable stab at the Ripper story, however.
Just not my cup of tea.

It is late in Queen Victoria's reign and the industrial fogs of London are filled with monsters. Jack is busy ripping. Queen Victoria's grief is never ending, and Prince Edward...well lets just say many believe he may be Jack. Queen Victoria's daughter Vicky, Empress Dowager of Germany has monsters of her own. Grief with the death of her husband, and a son name Wilhelm. When rumors about Edward reach Germany Vicky returns to London to support the family, dysfunctional as it is. Thus begins the royal search for the Ripper's true identity. Vicky is drawn to Spitalfields and White Chapel where she meets a police Detective with a monster of his own, a first wife who left him for minor royalty. Thus begins and eventually ends a psychological romance based on the confluence of needs and fears. It is this psychological romance that gives the book its luster. Loss and betrayal seek release, class and culture compel disunion. The mastery comes from setting the tale in London during the Victorian era. It is but a few miles from Buckingham to White Chapel, but the populations do not mingle and can not imagine doing so. Class as well as distance are barriers and taboos impoverishing and fragmenting the great city. Victorian morality flashes in the mirror as Jack slashes to free us from sexual sin, which proves to be a salve for Vicky and her losses. A wonderfully complex and crafted tale, with more layers than an onion.

When reading this novel I understood from the get-go that it was fiction. I was not looking for an accurate true crime story, which it isn’t. I was looking for a diversion and a good romance, which I know Mary Hart Perry is well versed in.
I found bought in this not so accurate story set in 1888, during the time a lunatic was murdering prostitutes in the streets of London. This background leads to an unlikely event - the commingling of a royal and the police detective investigating the crime.
Vicky, the daughter of the Queen of England and the widowed Empress of Germany, is given the task by her mother to quash the insinuations that one of the royals is involved in the crime. The queen goes off to Scotland and Vicky meets the detective, who is not Sherlock Holmes.
From here, Ms. Hart weaves her love story into the thrilling chase after the true criminal. Her lovers are Vicky and Detective Thomas. Their love is not the quick heated sexual kind but the deep routed connection that is lasting.
This theme is plausible where social status is overcome by love. And many of these character's lines a memorable.
The novel was fast paced and enjoyable – a good rainy weekend read.

There is a lot in this book that would be foreign to many people, but even America has a class culture. I remember being in class culture as long ago as boarding school (ancient history); if you came from certain boarding schools, in certain parts of La Belle Suisse you were treated differently than from others. I remember thinking I was lucky.
Ms. Perry starkly and heartbreakingly paints a picture of England during Her Industrial Revolution. Children were no better than slaves in the textile factories and women without money or a husband ended up on the streets. The Royals dont mix with anyone, the "Ton" have their noses in the air only because they have money, until the old man looses it all at the gambling tables, and hard working servants can never hope to better their situation. Then our intrepid author throws in one of London's most "beloved" criminal of the day, and the coppers trying to catch him. Merry Ol' England didn't have the idea yet that given enough food and warmth the poor souls working in their money mills would be better able to work harder. And children, well they were no better than trained monkeys clambering around he dangerous machines to fix whatever was broken and holding up the money making machines.
But this is mainly a love story, and a tale of sorrow, and no class is spared from either. It is a look back at history and not a whole lot has changed.....now the factories are in China, and the children risking their lives to fix things are Chinese. America, Europe and England have nothing to be proud about since we all did it before the Chinese. It is basically a microcosm of the human condition, the good the bad the ugly and the heartbreaking. And how 2 people managed to do their duty and still find love, and in my world keep love alive.
I imagine a lot of readers did not like the starkness of the truths Perry lays out for us, but take heart Madame, it is a very good book, and for historical readers a book well worth the the time to read. I hope you do more. Did I learn anything? Well every book I read along those lines just fills in more little gaps in my education. I would love to know how the Queen felt about Vicky's solution to her biggest problem, that being her love life. But since things like that are not discussed with one's mother I dont expect to ever find out, and it is fiction, albeit one with a lot of truth.
Well done Madam, it was worth reading, and unlike so many of the books I get once read will be deleted. This is a keeper, and I am glad I read it. Thank you for writing it!
